Movie: Hombre
This is the opening scene in the bar, where John Russell disciplines a range bum who was disrespecting two Indians, and the tempo of Russell’s screen presence was set.
“NO MORE”, he says after violently smashing the butt of his rifle into the lips of the bully. Unfortunately for the bully, his lips contained a shot glass, that was smashed against his teeth, providing a memorable lesson. Lesson learned? Not really. “Next time, I’ll drop you” says the bum, but the next time they meet, John Russell delivers a much more deadly reminder to the man who finally remembers where he saw John Russell before.
Hombre is a memorable and unique Western that like Chato’s Land, really carries the message of “Never Underestimating Your Opponent”. In movies, like in real life, you never know what you might be dealing with….Like a John Russell, mostly silent, but very, very deadly.
