Comfortable and Furious

Man of Steel (2013)

The triumph of production design over story, characterization or common sense.

Directed by (like most directors of superhero movies these days, a better credit should read, Coverage by, or Traffic Cop) Zack Snyder. (Just compare Richard Donner’s 1978 movie of Superman, and Snyder’s MOS, and you might appreciate the difference between a very good director and one who does not merit the title)
Screenplay by David S. Goyer
Story by David S. Goyer & Christopher Nolan

Screenwriter Goyer was apparently chosen as a “writer” for this mess because of his comic book mind. A review of his credits reveals screen stories completely dependent on CGI to work as well as they do, which is not much.

The story in MOS is told in a nonlinear fashion, and with good reason. A linear narrative would offer long stretches of boring dialogue, usually rehashing the same exposition over and over. The action, such as it is, consists of the same combat between the same characters involving excessive property damage over and over. Same action, different location.

“That’s-Enter-Tain-Ment!”

Henry Cavill’s Superman is perpetually bewildered, judging from his facial expression. Amy Adams is pretty as a picture.  Kevin Costner again proves he is no Glenn Ford as in the 1978 production. In fact, he is no Paul Ford, Harrison Ford, Ford Rainey, or any actor named Ford.

Michael Shannon’s Zog is just pissed-off, and who can blame him?

A touch of Gene Hackman’s Lex Luthor would have helped.
