Slasher movies, a.k.a. psychopathic killers, stalking, murders, and jump scares never get old. Some might call it weird, but for many of us, these movies are oddly satisfying. Actually, slasher films have a big fan base, and most of them are actually in it for the sheer thrill of the chase or sometimes, the over-the-top kills. For those who have watched countless slasher movies over the years, it’s been a hit-or-miss the past few years, but aside from the OG classics, there are actually a few new slasher movies.
In this blog post, we’ll be sharing some of the best slasher movies that you cannot miss on your next movie night. Our list includes both old and new movies, so some of them would be available on streaming services like Netflix and the others would be on traditional TV like Planet DISH. Let’s begin!
April Fool’s Day (1986)
At first, it seems like just another classic slasher—friends gathering at a secluded mansion, partying, and then… well, bodies start dropping. But there’s something off about the whole thing. The kills feel almost too staged, the suspense builds in a way that keeps you second-guessing, and just when it feels like the big reveal is coming — BOOM! the rug is pulled right out from under. This is literally a classic that most slasher fans re-watch over and over again. It’s that good.
Prom Night (1980)
Love anything disco? You’ll enjoy this movie for sure. Prom Night is about a tragic accident that happened as kids were playing a cruel game. Unfortunately, the accident led to someone dying. Years later, someone hasn’t forgotten… and you know what that means – revenge, revenge, and more revenge. As prom night arrives, so does a masked killer who’s now ready to make them pay. Jamie Lee Curtis stars in this movie, proving once again why she’s the ultimate scream queen.
Since it’s an old movie, it’s being aired on some channels on DIRECTV and other cable and satellite TVs. However, if you can’t seem to find the right timing, you can just go to specific streaming services like Amazon Prime Video and fuboTV that currently have Prom Night.
Hell Fest (2019)
If you love going to haunted houses at carnivals or theme parks, Hell Fest can be a nightmare for you… well, in a good way. It’s about a group of friends who went to a horror-themed amusement park where masked actors jump out to scare them. The problem is, one of the so-called actors isn’t “acting”. Now, it’ll be a fight for their lives as they try to escape the masked killer in a scary house filled with other innocent masked killers. It’s definitely a good watch. 10/10!
Thanksgiving (2023)
Thanksgiving is a new-ish slasher movie that is surprisingly good. You can watch this on Netflix, Apple TV, and select Spanish TV services. Here’s what this movie is about. During a chaotic Black Friday riot at RightMart in Plymouth, Massachusetts, several people are killed, including the pregnant mistress of Sheriff Eric Newlon. A year later, a masked killer known as “John Carver” begins targeting those involved in the incident, including Jessica Wright and her friends.
As the killings go on and on, Jessica and her friends are abducted, with her stepmother cooked alive as part of a twisted Thanksgiving dinner. Jessica eventually escapes and is led to believe her ex-boyfriend Bobby is the killer. But, is he really the killer or is it someone who’s appearing to be the “good guy”?
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974)
Of course, this list wouldn’t be complete without the legendary TCM. There have been a lot of TCM movies in the past few years, but nothing beats the OG. Trust us. It’s about the famous Leatherface, a chainsaw-wielding maniac with a mask made of human skin. A group of friends takes a road trip and ends up at an old farmhouse, unknowingly the biggest mistake of their entire lives. One by one, they’re hunted down in the most brutal ways.
To be honest, the scariest part about this movie, well, in our opinion, isn’t the kills or how it was creatively done. It’s how real everything feels and the actors’ exceptional performance. For someone who gets nightmares when watching scary movies, this is to be avoided because trust us — it will stick with you for days. But it’s so good though, so it’s also really worth watching.
The Bottom Line
There you have it! Our five favorite slasher movies of all time. As you may have noticed, most of them are old films — but even though they’re dated, they’re timeless and can compete with newer slasher movies. If you’ve been in the slasher community for a while or just exploring a new genre, you’ll never go wrong with the films we just shared. We hope you enjoy watching them!
